The first school to win back-to-back NCAA Division I softball championships was UCLA. They won back-to-back championships in 1984 and 1985. They were also the first to win three in a row in 1988, 1989, and 1990. They went back-to-back again in 2003 and 2004. The only other team to win back-to-back NCAA Division I softball championships is Arizona who has done it twice in 1993/1994, and 2006/2007.

First Year for Softball in the Olympics

Fastpitch softball was first played in the Olympics at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia in the United States. In that year, the gold medal went to the United States, the Silver to China, and the bronze to Australia. A softball pitch at the 1996 Olympics was clocked at 73.3 MPH.

Softball has been played in every summer Olympics since 1996 and will be played in the 2008 Olympics in China. Sadly, baseball and softball were voted out of the 2012 summer games in London.

According to the Guinness Book of World Records, The longest softball game was played in Dollard-des-Ormeaux, Quebec, Canada and went from June 29 to July 3, 2005 - a total time of 95 hours and 23 minutes. The game was for charity benefiting the Montreal Children's Hospital and the Starlight Children's Foundation of Canada. The final score was Delmar 774 to Renmark 729.

Tennessee's Monica Abbott set the record for the most strikeouts in an NCAA career in May, 2007. As of May 6, 2007 Abbott had 2,265 strikeouts. She surpassed the record set by Cat Osterman of Texas, which was set in 2006. Abbott holds the record for most career strikeouts at all NCAA levels. 2007 was a big year for college softball strikeout records as Angela Tincher of Virginia Tech. set the ACC record for most career strikeouts, also in May. As of May 10, 2007, Tincher had 1,403 career strikeouts.

There is no "official" record for the fastest softball pitch. Here are some of the reputed records after a search of various archives:

  • Guinness is supposed to have clocked a softball pitch at 68.9 miles per hour.
  • National Pro Fastpitch (NPF), a women's professional softball league, claims that pitches of "70+" MPH are common. There are many other references in various sources making the same 70+ miles per hour claim.
  • The fastest softball pitch reportedly clocked at the Atlanta Olympics was 73.2 MPH.
  • Eddie Feigner, a famous softball player and the founder of the "King and His Court" 4-man softball team is supposed to have been clocked at 104 miles per hour. In a game against Major Leaguers ballplayers, Eddie Feigner struck out, Willie Mays, Roberto Clemente, Brooks Robinson Willie McCovey, Maurey Wills, and Harmon Killebrew all in a row.
