National Women's Hockey League (NWHL)
The National Women's Hockey League (NWHL) was founded in 1999 and is the highest level of women's hockey in the world. The NWHL expanded in 2006 when it absorbed the teams of the Western Women's Hockey League (WWHL).
The NWHL is one of the few leagues where women compete at the professional level. Others that allow women to compete at the professional level include the WNBA, National Pro Fastpitch (softball), and World Team Tennis.
The National Women's Hockey League is divided into two divisions. The NWHL Western Division is made up of the teams of the former WWHL and consists of 4 teams. The Central/Eastern Division is made up of 7 teams.
