Hockey
Hockey, also sometimes referred to as ice hockey, is a sport with a very long history. Games where individuals hit an object with some form of a curved stick have been in existence since before recorded history. The modern hockey game was developed around Montreal, Canada, with the first indoor game being played by students of McGill University in 1875.
Hockey is probably most often associated with both the Winter Olympics, where it has been a sport since 1924, with the World Cup of Hockey, with the Ice Hockey World Championships, and with North America's National Hockey League (NHL).
In North America there are seven professional hockey leagues, including the NHL and a women's professional hockey league, the National Women's Hockey League (NWHL). North America's professional hockey leagues are:
- American Hockey League (AHL)
- Central Hockey League (CHL)
- ECHL
- National Hockey League (NHL)
- National Women's Hockey League (NWHL)
- Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL)
- United Hockey League (UHL)
