3 Zip Was the Curse

The Boston Bruins have a thing with 3. They can’t get past it. At least the could not get past it in the NHL Conference Semifinals. They went up 3 to 0 in their series with the Philadelphia Flyers. They went up 3 to 0 in the decisive game 7. In neither case could they get the job done. 3 to 0 in the series became a 4 to 3 series loss. 3 to 0 in game 7 became a 4 to 3 loss. The symmetry is too perfect…

So now the Bruins take their place in history as only the 3rd NHL team to blow a 3 to 0 playoff lead to lose the series.

Dice K Delivers

Quick. When was the last time you can remember Red Sox pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka having a great pitching outing?

I couldn’t remember either. It has been a while for the long on promise short on delivery pitcher.

Well that changed last night with a masterful 7 inning, 3 hit, 9 strike out, no walks outing for the K-man. It couldn’t have come at a better time for the Red Sox whose pitchers have been having a fairly rough time of it this season. With Beckett’s struggles, it is critical for Dice K to step up and deliver. He did just that last night. Let’s hope it lasts…

Red Sox Pitching Coming Around?

Up until a couple of days ago pitching has not been a highlight for the 2010 Boston Red Sox. That has changed with two great back-to-back outings from Clay Buchholz and Jon Lester. Buch was masterful on Tuesday giving up only 1 run in 8 innings while striking out 4. Lester was even better the following night shutting out the Jays through 7 innings giving up only 1 hit while striking out 11. As a matter of fact, Lester, Bard, and Papelbon combined for 15 strikeouts.

Maybe the pitching is starting to live up to pre-season expectations?

2010 Boston Red Sox Starting to Come into Focus

I know that it is only 9 down of 162, but it seems like the 2010 edition of the Boston Red Sox are starting to come into better focus. I’m afraid that for Red Sox fans 2010 may well prove to be a trying year. This is a team built on pitching and defense with questionable hitting. So 9 games into the season how does it look.

Pitching – Not as good as it is supposed to be, especially for the bullpen. The starters have certainly been stronger than the bullpen, but even for the starters there have been a few bad outings.

Defense – For a team built on defense, there have been some surprising defensive lapses 9 games into the season. So far the BoSox have 5 errors in 9 games.

Hitting – It’s like a Katy Perry song (“You’re hot then your cold”…). The have hit well in some games, and then in others… In their losses to date (5) the Red Sox are averaging less than 2 runs a game. Contrast that with their wins to date (4) where they are averaging nearly 8 runs per game.

Clearly the hitting is going to be hit or miss. With that in the equation, the other 2 parts of the game are going to have to be stellar. So far, that is not the case.

My early analysis on the 2010 Boston Red Sox. They will be competitive but I expect them to finish 3rd in the AL East out of the playoffs. I certainly hope that I am wrong, but I do not currently see anything to indicate otherwise…

Pitchers Power Drive: Pitching Training Aid

This is new for us here at Nutty About Sports, reviewing a product. But I happened to come across a product that I think is worthy of a mention, and since I have first-hand experience with it… Well, truth be told, my 14 year old son has first hand experience with it. I have first-hand experience watching him use it and seeing the results.

A little background. My son plays Little League, now up on the big diamond. He has been a pitcher since he was 9. He loves the game and loves to pitch so we have gotten him lessons with various pitching coaches over the year. Lately he has been working out with the Winning Pitchers Baseball Academy (in Framingham, MA), where among other drills he has been working with the Pitchers Power Drive pitching training aid.

The Pitchers Power Drive has helped him with two things, balance in his leg lift, and driving with his hip to get the maximum force behind the pitch. For such a simple device, the results are actually pretty impressive. For anyone with a son who is going to be pitching in high school I would recommend taking a look at it. It can be very helpful with the most basic of mechanics.

Longest Winning Streaks

I came across this list of longest winning streaks that I thought I would share:

  • MLB 26 games by the New York Giants (1916)
  • NBA – 33 games by the LA Lakers (1971-72)
  • NFL – 21 games by the New England Patriots (2003-04)
  • NHL 17 games by the Pittsburgh Penguins (1992-93)

USA Winter Olympic Team Having a Great Olympics

Up until the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver the US Winter Olympic Team never won more than 25 medals in an Olympics held outside of the United States. Until 2010…

At the latest count the US has 28 medals at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics with more to come. The Olympics are always fun to watch, but isn’t it even more fun when your team is doing well…

Thanks to teamusa.org for bringing this to my attention.

Sure Signs of Spring

Forget Punxsutawney Phil (you know, the groundhog). The best harbinger of spring that I know – the Boston Red Sox equipment truck left for Florida on Friday. This is an occurrence that I am sure is being duplicated in many other Major League cities – some headed to Arizona, others going to Florida. Yes, as the boys of summer start to gather around the end of the week, the end of winter ’09/’10 is truly in sight…

And Now They’re Just, Well. . . Um. . . Losers

So much was made about the 2009 Indianapolis Colts season. How they could have been perfect, but it was more important to focus on the ultimate prize. So how did that work out? The final analysis – they are just another imperfect team that went to the Super Bowl and lost. In 3 years time no one will remember that they “could have been” perfect. They were not, and they do not give prizes for almost being perfect – nor do you get remembered for almost being perfect. Just as they do not give prizes for losing the Super Bowl – that prize (the Lombardi Trophy) goes to the winner.

Celtics Like the Patriots

No, the Celtics are not going to be playing football any time soon and the Patriots are not about to play basketball. It has more to do with a feeling – a feeling that I had about both teams well into the season…

Stay with me on this. Most Patriots fans about midway through the 2009 season pretty much came to two conclusions. 1) The Patriots would make the playoffs, and 2) they would go no where once they got there. Or course the feeling was validated in round one of the playoffs.

Unfortunately, I’m now starting to get that same nagging feeling about the Celtics. There is no doubt that the Celtics will make the playoffs. After that there is nothing but doubt. It is starting to feel like once they get there they, like the Patriots before them, will go no where…
