Longest Winning Streaks

March 11th, 2010

I came across this list of longest winning streaks that I thought I would share:

  • MLB 26 games by the New York Giants (1916)
  • NBA – 33 games by the LA Lakers (1971-72)
  • NFL – 21 games by the New England Patriots (2003-04)
  • NHL 17 games by the Pittsburgh Penguins (1992-93)

USA Winter Olympic Team Having a Great Olympics

February 25th, 2010

Up until the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver the US Winter Olympic Team never won more than 25 medals in an Olympics held outside of the United States. Until 2010…

At the latest count the US has 28 medals at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics with more to come. The Olympics are always fun to watch, but isn’t it even more fun when your team is doing well…

Thanks to teamusa.org for bringing this to my attention.

Sure Signs of Spring

February 14th, 2010

Forget Punxsutawney Phil (you know, the groundhog). The best harbinger of spring that I know – the Boston Red Sox equipment truck left for Florida on Friday. This is an occurrence that I am sure is being duplicated in many other Major League cities – some headed to Arizona, others going to Florida. Yes, as the boys of summer start to gather around the end of the week, the end of winter ‘09/’10 is truly in sight…

And Now They’re Just, Well. . . Um. . . Losers

February 8th, 2010

So much was made about the 2009 Indianapolis Colts season. How they could have been perfect, but it was more important to focus on the ultimate prize. So how did that work out? The final analysis – they are just another imperfect team that went to the Super Bowl and lost. In 3 years time no one will remember that they “could have been” perfect. They were not, and they do not give prizes for almost being perfect – nor do you get remembered for almost being perfect. Just as they do not give prizes for losing the Super Bowl – that prize (the Lombardi Trophy) goes to the winner.

Celtics Like the Patriots

February 4th, 2010

No, the Celtics are not going to be playing football any time soon and the Patriots are not about to play basketball. It has more to do with a feeling – a feeling that I had about both teams well into the season…

Stay with me on this. Most Patriots fans about midway through the 2009 season pretty much came to two conclusions. 1) The Patriots would make the playoffs, and 2) they would go no where once they got there. Or course the feeling was validated in round one of the playoffs.

Unfortunately, I’m now starting to get that same nagging feeling about the Celtics. There is no doubt that the Celtics will make the playoffs. After that there is nothing but doubt. It is starting to feel like once they get there they, like the Patriots before them, will go no where…

The Run is Done

January 11th, 2010

If you are a New England Patriots fan, the first decade of the 21st century has been a pretty good ride. 4 trips to the Super Bowl with 3 victories. Not bad.

Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end. One can look at the drubbing the Patriots received at the hands of the Ravens in the Wild Card game yesterday as a fitting signal of the end of an era. The game pointed out a lot of flaws with the current Patriots team – flaws that will take quite a bit of rebuilding. Suffice it to say that the Patriots are no longer at the very top tier of the NFL.

But more than flaws with the current makeup of the team were apparent. This is going to be heresy for long time Pat’s fans, but the game, as well as the season, pointed out flaws in coaching. Yes, there were the questionable calls – going for it on 4th down in Indy for example. But there have also been a lot of questionable calls on player personnel. Who wasn’t wishing that Richard Seymour was still with the team while watching the Ravens run at will?

But I think there is a more basic issue. I think that the rest of the league has finally figured Coach Bill out. In a league that prides itself on copying what works, Coach Bill’s ways have been analyzed and copied to death. Almost everyone prepares with the same fanaticism as Coach Bill these days. And stop and think about it:

  • When was the last time you really felt that the Patriots had a great game plan, especially in the playoffs?
  • Beginning with the Super Bowl loss to the Giants, how many times have you thought that Coach Bill was out coached?
  • How often did you think this year – who on earth is calling the plays?
  • When was the last time you saw a lot of creativity on offense – 2007?
  • When was the last time you thought the Patriots had a great defense?

All of that you can lay at Coach Bill’s feet. So not only do the Pat’s need to rebuild the team, but Coach Bill also needs to step up and take the teams coaching to another level.

He’s not worth it!

December 11th, 2009

I love hot stove baseball…unlimited possiblities, unlimited fantasies. Free agent galore. Some good, some great, some a gamble.

But there’s an interesting attitude that has become pervasive in fandom when it comes to free agents. The mantra of “he’s not worth it.”

Jason Bay wants $15 million a year for 5 years, ‘he’s not worth it.’ Matt Holiday wants $20 million a year, ‘he’s not worth it.’ John Lackey at $15 million a year, “he’s not worth it.”

Let me let you in on a little secret, these guys PLAY a game for a living. Most of them would play for meal money…none of them are worth it. There’s no path to world peace, there’s no cure for cancer…they play baseball.

They’re not worth it. They’re not worth anywhere near it. That all said, why do fans care? Let’s not spend the money on Matt Holliday because why again?

It’s not my money, it’s not your money, it’s the owners who pay. And now if the lower payroll you’re not going to see lower ticket prices. It just doesn’t work that way.

So none of these guess are worth the big free agency payday coming there way. But why do we care?

We shouldn’t.

Let’s sign Lackey, Beltre, Holliday and Bay…it works for the Yankees. If those guys sign huge deals, good for them.

It’s not my money, I don’t care!
