Have a house full of basketball fans restless for a great road trip? The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Massachusetts is a shrine to roundball and offers something for every age fan. Shoot hoops on legendary Center Court or learn about the history of the game played ’round the world; those are only two of the fascinating activities in this forty-thousand square foot facility.

How to Find the Basketball Hall of Fame
Located in Springfield, Massachusetts, the Hall of Fame is in the heart of scenic Pioneer Valley. Springfield is just one hour west of Boston on the Massachusetts Turnpike (MA Route 90), and also easy to reach from the north or south on Hwy 91. That easy highway access makes the Basketball Hall of Fame a slam dunk for travelers.

What You’ll Find at the Hall of Fame
Imagine three enormous floors filled with basketball history and heroes, and even the chance to glance at visiting basketball legends. Visitors are encouraged to join the action, on Center Court or in skills clinics, shooting contests and hundreds of interactive exhibits.

That doesn’t even take into account the hours you’ll spend learning the stories of almost three hundred Hall of Fame inductees. Greats like Charles Barkley, James Naismith and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar are celebrated throughout the Hall, making a visit here a comprehensive education on the game. Young fans may think the sport belongs to their generation, but a trip to the Basketball Hall of Fame will open their eyes to the sport’s rich history.

There are also rotating photo exhibits, special Hall of Famer appearances and regular Youth Tournaments to enjoy. In fact, there’s not a thing about basketball that isn’t examined and celebrated in this world-famous shrine to the sport.

National League Finally Wins One

The National League finally won an All-Star game for the first time in a long time.

For the record, the last time the National League won was in 1996. Since then they have lost 12 of 13 (there was a draw in 2002).

More important than the win, the National League will now have home field advantage for the 2010 World Series. This is first time since the All-Star game has decided World Series home field advantage (instituted in 2003). The last time the National League had home field advantage was 2001.

World Cup Over

Spain it is. They were expected to win it all going in and they did (although the Netherlands gave them a good run…).

Word Cup coverage and interest in the United States was very respectable given that we are not a soccer nation and that the home town team was out of it for a long time. I, for one, will miss the excitement of a sport involving the whole world.

World Cup Soccer Final – Netherlands vs. Spain

And now the World Cup is down to the final two. Two teams that have never won the World Cup, one of which (Spain) has never been to the finals. To date the best finish of either team has been:

  • Netherlands – Lost in the finals twice in 1974 and 1978. Also finished 4th in 1998.
  • Spain – Best finish 4th place in 1950.

There are two things that have made this edition of the World Cup so enjoyable. Many teams made it much further than expected. The second is the level of interest still in the United States even though the home town team exited some time ago.

The Playoff Up 3-0 Choke

I saw this in the Boston Globe this morning and thought I would share. These are the statistics on going up 3-0 in a playoff series only to lose.

  • MLB Baseball – 31 series since 1903, only 1 comeback (3.2%)
  • NHL Hockey – 163 series since 1919, 3 comebacks (1.8%)
  • NBA Basketball – 93 series since 1947, 0 comebacks (0.0%)

Starting To Get a Sinking Feeling

Could it be deja vu all over again? I seem to remember the Bruins up 3 – zip in a playoff series and losing it all. The Boston Celtics were up 3 – zip over Orlando, but now, somehow, the series is 3 – 2. I am starting to get a sick feeling in the pit of my stomach…

3 Zip Was the Curse

The Boston Bruins have a thing with 3. They can’t get past it. At least the could not get past it in the NHL Conference Semifinals. They went up 3 to 0 in their series with the Philadelphia Flyers. They went up 3 to 0 in the decisive game 7. In neither case could they get the job done. 3 to 0 in the series became a 4 to 3 series loss. 3 to 0 in game 7 became a 4 to 3 loss. The symmetry is too perfect…

So now the Bruins take their place in history as only the 3rd NHL team to blow a 3 to 0 playoff lead to lose the series.

Dice K Delivers

Quick. When was the last time you can remember Red Sox pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka having a great pitching outing?

I couldn’t remember either. It has been a while for the long on promise short on delivery pitcher.

Well that changed last night with a masterful 7 inning, 3 hit, 9 strike out, no walks outing for the K-man. It couldn’t have come at a better time for the Red Sox whose pitchers have been having a fairly rough time of it this season. With Beckett’s struggles, it is critical for Dice K to step up and deliver. He did just that last night. Let’s hope it lasts…

Red Sox Pitching Coming Around?

Up until a couple of days ago pitching has not been a highlight for the 2010 Boston Red Sox. That has changed with two great back-to-back outings from Clay Buchholz and Jon Lester. Buch was masterful on Tuesday giving up only 1 run in 8 innings while striking out 4. Lester was even better the following night shutting out the Jays through 7 innings giving up only 1 hit while striking out 11. As a matter of fact, Lester, Bard, and Papelbon combined for 15 strikeouts.

Maybe the pitching is starting to live up to pre-season expectations?
