NBA

The National Basketball Association, or NBA, is synonymous with basketball in North America even though there are actually many professional basketball leagues. It was founded in 1946 as the Basketball Association of America (BAA). It changed its name to the National Basketball Association or NBA in 1949 after merging with the National Basketball League.

The NBA itself actually has three leagues:

  1. The NBA, which everyone associates with men's professional basketball in North America
  2. The NBA Development League or D-League
  3. The WNBA (women's professional basketball)

The NBA has 30 teams in two conferences, the Eastern Conference which consists of 15 teams organized into three divisions (the Atlantic, Central, and Southeast), and the Western Conference, which also consists of 15 teams also organized into three divisions (the Northwest, Pacific, and Southwest). Following is a brief synopsis of the NBA and a listing of all NBA teams (the NBA D-League and the WNBA are described elsewhere in this site).
