Basketball
Basketball was invented by Dr. James Naismith, a Canadian physician, in Springfield, Massachusetts in 1891. Dr. Naismith's goal was to create an indoor game that would keep students fit and occupied during long New England winters.
When most people think of basketball they think of the NBA, or the National Basketball Association. To a somewhat lesser extent, others may also think of the WNBA, or Women's National Basketball Association. The NBA also has a development league known as the NBA D-League, which is the minor league farm system for the NBA.
In addition the the NBA, WNBA, and the NBA D-League, there are five other professional basketball leagues in North America. These leagues are:
- American Basketball Association (ABA)
- Continental Basketball Association (CBA)
- International Basketball League (IBL)
- United States Basketball Association (USBL)
- World Basketball Association (WBA)
