Cleveland Indians History

The Cleveland Indians were one of the American League's eight charter franchises. They were founded in 1901 as the Cleveland Blues. They changed their name to the Cleveland Bronchos in 1902, and again changed their name to the Cleveland Naps, finally settling on Indians in 1915. The team also goes by two nicknames - "The tribe" and "The Wahoos".

The Cleveland Indians have played in three stadiums in their history:

  1. Jacobs Field from 1994 to present.
  2. Cleveland Stadium for night and weekend games from 1932 to 1945, and all games from 1945 to 1993. The stadium was also known as Cleveland Municipal Stadium from 1932-1974.
  3. League Park form 1901-1946 which was also known as Dunn Field from 1916-1927.

The Cleveland Indians are the current owner of the record for the most consecutive sold out games in Major League Baseball history. From 1995 to 2001 the Indians sold out 455 consecutive home games. To honor the accomplishment, the team retired the number 455.
